Homily for Monday of the 1st Week in Ordinary Time
Yesterday, we celebrated the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. When Jesus emerged from the water, we heard how the heavens were opened, the Spirit of the Lord descended upon Jesus and the voice of the Father declared: “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” In today’s reading from the Letter to the Hebrews, the author goes through all the prophecies about who the Messiah would be and his mission and purpose. They are all point to Christ being the Messiah, the Savior of the world. They reveal to us who Jesus truly is.
As we recognize Jesus’ identity, we are now, like the first apostles, being called to accept Him as the Savior, accept Him as the Christ and to follow Him. That will look differently for all of us, but are we willing to do it? Jesus is asking us to follow Him today, how will we respond?
