Who Are We For Jesus?

Homily for Tuesday of the 16th Week in Ordinary Time

Who are we for Jesus? In the Gospel today, Jesus says that His brothers and sisters are those who do the will of the Father. So who are we for Jesus? Are we His brothers and sisters? Do we seek to do the will of the Father, are we striving for holiness, are we seeking to listen to the voice of the Lord?

Prayer is the only way for us to enter more deeply into relationship with the Lord, it is the only way for us to be able to discern His voice from the noise that we hear in the world. If we aren’t dedicating time each day to read Scripture, to have intimate conversations with the Lord about our struggles, to ask for His guidance on decisions, or to simply say thank you for the blessings He gives us, then can we really say that we are followers of Jesus? Can we say that we are His brothers and sisters? No, we can’t.

May this be a challenge to each of us tonight — myself included. What one thing can we do starting today that will help us enter more deeply into relationship with God? May we put that into practice so that we can say that we are the brothers and sisters of Jesus.
